Day Hike Packing List

what to pack for a Table Mountain hike

Preparing properly for your hike up Table Mountain ensures a safe, enjoyable and rewarding experience. While we guide you every step of the way at Cape Town Guided Hikes, being correctly equipped makes all the difference — especially in Cape Town’s ever-changing mountain weather.

Here’s your essential day hike packing list:

1. Water (Minimum 1.5 Litres)

Hydration is critical on any Table Mountain hike. Even on cooler days, the climb can be demanding, and dehydration happens quickly. We recommend at least 1.5 litres per person, depending on the route and weather conditions.

On warmer summer days, consider bringing extra.

2. Comfortable Trail Shoes

Proper footwear is non-negotiable. Wear closed, comfortable trail shoes or hiking shoes with good grip. Many of the routes on Table Mountain involve rocky terrain, uneven surfaces and occasional scrambling.

Avoid:

  • Sandals

  • Flat-soled fashion sneakers

  • Slippery running shoes

Grip and ankle support matter.

3. Weather-Appropriate Clothing (Layered)

Cape Town’s mountain weather can shift quickly — even if it’s sunny at sea level.

We recommend:

  • Lightweight moisture-wicking clothing

  • A warm fleece or mid-layer

  • A windproof jacket

  • A lightweight rain shell in winter

Layering allows you to adapt to temperature changes during your guided hike.

4. Sun Protection

Even on overcast days, UV exposure on the mountain is strong.

Pack:

  • Sunscreen (SPF 50)

  • A cap or wide-brim hat

  • Sunglasses

The African sun is powerful year-round.

5. Small Daypack

Bring a comfortable daypack (15–25L is ideal) to carry your essentials. It should sit securely on your back without bouncing or straining your shoulders.

6. Snacks & Light Energy Food

While our hikes are structured and paced, it’s important to maintain energy.

Good options include:

  • Sweet and salty snacks

  • Energy bars

  • Nuts

  • Biltong

  • Fruit

  • Sandwiches

Short snack breaks are part of the experience.

7. Personal Medication

If you have asthma, allergies, or any medical condition, please bring necessary medication and inform your guide in advance. Safety is always our top priority.

Optional (But Recommended)

  • Camera or smartphone

  • Lightweight gloves in winter

  • Buff or neck warmer

  • Trekking poles (if preferred)

When hiking with Cape Town Guided Hikes, you don’t need:
