Lush forest ascent
Climb one of Table Mountain’s most scenic and varied routes on this guided hike up Skeleton Gorge. Starting from the lush gardens of Kirstenbosch, this classic ascent takes you through dense indigenous forest, alongside flowing streams, and up steep ladders before emerging onto the open Back Table near the mountain’s historic dams.
We begin in Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden, entering cool, shaded forest almost immediately. The lower section of Skeleton Gorge is steep and immersive, with stone steps and forest paths winding alongside mossy rocks and seasonal waterfalls.
As we climb higher, the route becomes more adventurous. A series of wooden ladders helps us ascend the steeper rock bands, adding an exciting hands-on element without being overly technical. I’ll guide you carefully through these sections, setting a steady pace and ensuring confident movement throughout.
Once above the forest, the trail opens onto the Back Table, where the landscape shifts dramatically to wide skies, fynbos, and mountain wetlands. We continue to the area near Hely-Hutchinson Dam, where we pause to rest, enjoy the views, and soak in the contrast between forested gorge and open plateau.
We descend via a planned return route (typically the Contour Path and Nursery Ravine or Skeleton Gorge, depending on conditions), finishing with a relaxed walk back into Kirstenbosch.
