Historic, direct classic
Take on the most direct and historic route to the top of Table Mountain on this guided hike up Platteklip Gorge. This classic ascent offers a straightforward but demanding climb, rewarding hikers with ever-expanding views over Cape Town and a true sense of achievement at the summit.
We begin at the base of Platteklip Gorge, stepping onto a clear, well-worn path that climbs steadily between towering rock walls. The route is continuous and unapologetically uphill, making it a physically demanding but uncomplicated ascent with no technical scrambling required.
As we gain height, the gorge narrows and the views begin to open behind us, stretching across the City Bowl, Table Bay, and toward Robben Island. I’ll set a steady, manageable pace with regular rest stops, allowing time to catch your breath and take in the scenery.
Higher up, the rocky steps become steeper, but the path remains clear and safe. Reaching the top of the gorge feels incredibly rewarding as we step onto the upper plateau of Table Mountain, where wide-open views and cool mountain air await.
After enjoying time on top, we descend via the same route, taking care on the steep sections and finishing with a relaxed return to the trailhead.
