Dramatic ravine ascent
Explore one of Table Mountain’s most scenic and less-travelled routes on this guided hike up Newlands Ravine. This rewarding out-and-back hike climbs from indigenous forest into dramatic mountain terrain, finishing at the spectacular Pulpit Rock viewpoint, where sweeping views stretch across Cape Town and Table Bay.
We begin in Newlands Forest, stepping straight into cool, shaded indigenous woodland. The trail follows the course of Newlands Ravine, steadily climbing alongside rocky streams and moss-covered boulders, creating a peaceful and immersive mountain experience from the start.
As we gain height, the forest gradually thins and the ravine opens up. The trail becomes steeper in places, with rocky steps and short scrambles that add to the sense of adventure. I’ll guide you carefully through these sections, setting a steady pace and ensuring a safe, enjoyable ascent.
Higher up, we reach Pulpit Rock, a dramatic natural viewpoint perched above the City Bowl. From here, the views are exceptional — looking out over Cape Town, Table Bay, Robben Island, and across to the distant mountains on a clear day. We’ll take time to rest, enjoy the scenery, and soak in the quiet atmosphere before beginning our descent.
We return via the same route, enjoying the cool forest and changing perspectives as we make our way back down through the ravine.
