Discover one of Silvermine’s most iconic and family-friendly hikes on this guided journey to Elephant’s Eye Cave. This scenic out-and-back route leads to a large rock cave overlooking False Bay, offering beautiful views, gentle gradients, and a peaceful introduction to the Cape Peninsula’s mountain landscapes.
We begin our hike in the Silvermine Nature Reserve, following a well-marked trail that gradually winds through indigenous fynbos. The incline is gentle and consistent, making this a relaxed and enjoyable walk suitable for a wide range of fitness levels.
As we move higher, the surrounding vegetation opens up to reveal sweeping views across the southern suburbs and out toward the ocean. Along the way, I’ll share insight into the unique fynbos ecosystem and the history of the Silvermine area.
The trail leads us to Elephant’s Eye Cave, a massive natural rock overhang set into a mountainside that resembles the shape of an elephant’s head — giving the cave its name. From here, we take time to rest, explore the cave, and enjoy expansive views across False Bay, making it a perfect photo stop.
After soaking in the scenery, we return along the same path, enjoying a relaxed descent back through the mountain landscape.
